Southend Emergency Fund
Southend Emergency Fund (SEF) came out of a grass-roots response to COVID-19.
During the first lockdown in March 2020, Shared Space charity www.charityshop.co was approached by Southend businessman Alan Kirkman – he wanted to raise money to help those most affected by the pandemic.
Within 4 weeks, Shared Space became the charity behind SEF, the website was up, funds raised and the first money was in the hands of those in need. In the year that followed, £219,715 was raised through the generosity of many people.
At the end of March 2021, Shared Space handed Southend Emergency Fund over to sit under the auspices of SAVS so it could return to their primary work in Southend.

Who’s driving this?

- ALAN KIRKMAN has been involved in business and charity work in Southend for over 50 years and is a trustee of Lady McAdden breast screening trust and was one of the founders of the fund
- SHARED SPACE helped create the Southend Emergency fund in 2020 to support and boost the community of Southend as COVID and associated lockdowns impacted on them.
- PETER DOMINEY was a driving force behind the fund and has started local charities Church from Scratch, co-founding Shared Space social enterprise and 57 West which works with the homeless.
- IVAN KING founded and has driven forward the fund. He is a Baptist Minister, with 39 years’ experience as a manager and consultant mostly in the public and charitable sectors.
- EVERYMIND AT WORK provides mental health support to companies and is offering free resources and advice to support people’s wellbeing at this time, they too supported the fund’s formation.
